SouthWest Writers celebrated Poetry Month in April 2021 with award-winning Poets from Ireland!

Geraldine Mills, author of five collections of poetry, three collections of short stories and a children’s novel for middle-grade readers. She has been awarded many prizes and bursaries for her poetry and fiction, including the Hennessy/Tribune New Irish Writer Award, three Arts Council Bursaries and a Patrick and Katherine Kavanagh Fellowship. She collaborated with American poet Lisa C. Taylor on The Other Side of Longing which was chosen as the Gerson Reading at the University of Connecticut, 2011.

Luke Morgan, award-winning Irish writer and director. His debut collection Honest Walls was published by Arlen House in 2016. According to the Poetry Ireland Review, Luke has “shimmering potential.” Luke’s films have been screened at film festivals all over the world. His debut feature film, Sooner or Later, is available now in all territories on Amazon Prime. Luke’s second collection, Beast, is forthcoming from Arlen House.

Pete Mullineaux, author of four collections including Session — “the power of now in poetic terms” according to Trad Connect — and How to Bake a Planet — “a gem” says Poetry Ireland Review. His work has been featured on RTE’s Arena programme, and comparisons made with Roger McGough, John Clare, John Cooper-Clarke and Pete Seeger. Individual poems have been published widely and as far afield as India and Japan. He was selected for Poetry Ireland Review’s special 100th issue, edited by Paul Muldoon. Pete also plays guitar, mandolin and fiddle.

Moya Roddy, poet and fiction writer whose first novel, The Long Way Home, was described in the Irish Times as “simply brilliant.” Her debut poetry collection Out of the Ordinary was shortlisted for the Strong/Shine Award. “A book of minute observations, of stolen glimpses and sudden seismic epiphanies…capturing fleeting moments that pierce the heart,” says Jessica Traynor, North Magazine. Moya has been shortlisted for the Hennessy Award and nominated for the Patrick Kavanagh Award. A Wiser Girl is her latest novel and her second collection is due in September 2021.
Gerard Hanberry, an award-winning Irish poet, writer, musician and teacher. To date he has published four collections of poetry and is currently working on his fifth. His most recent collection What Our Shoes Say About Us was published by Salmon Poetry in July 2014 and follows At Grattan Road (2009). The poet Paul Perry reviewing for the Irish Times said At Grattan Road “is bursting at the seams with fine poems.” A stone plaque of his poem The Kasbah on Quay Street was erected on Quay Street, in his home town of Galway in the West of Ireland, in April 2015.
